Expedition Information

Together with the Taxon Expeditions, The Mulokot Foundation, The University of Suriname, Echo Echo Foundation and Soilytix, we have designed a method that brings Indigenous ecological knowledge and cutting-edge biodiversity science together. Join us to help give the Wayana the tools to govern their own natural resources (the tropical rainforest of the Amazon) better.

The rainforest of the Wayana is one of the richest on the planet. The dense, low-lying forests, the barren granitic rocky outcrops, and the broad meandering rivers full of rapids, host a crazy diversity of birds, mammals, frogs, reptiles, and insects. The iconic two-meter-long giant otter is seen on the shores of the river while toucans, macaws, and large colorful butterflies glide across the treetops. But the small community of Indigenous people is having a hard time protecting this paradise against outside forces. That is why the Wayana are reaching out to help document their biodiversity to give them the data that are needed to argue for conservation and for more sustainable revenues, like ecotourism.

Dates next Expeditions:

Our Expedition leaders

Menno Schilthuizen

is a senior researcher at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, and professor of evolution and biodiversity at Leiden University, the Netherlands. For seven years, he lived and worked in Malaysian Borneo, where he helped set up the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation. He published more than 100 papers in scientific journals including Nature and Science. His work focuses on evolution and biodiversity, mostly in insects and snails and mostly in Borneo, the Mediterranean, and the Netherlands. The coming year he will focus on the South of Suriname. Schilthuizen is also active in science popularization. He has published four books for the general public, most recently: Nature’s Nether Regions (Penguin, 2014) and Darwin Comes to Town (Quercus Books, 2018). He is also a regular contributor to magazines such as TimeNew Scientistthe Huffington Post, and the New York Times. He is the co-founder of Taxon Expeditions.

Iva Njunjić

is a biospeleologist (or: cave-biologist) working on evolution of cave beetles. She obtained her PhD from the Paris-Sorbonne University and has worked at the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia, the University of Novi Sad, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, and the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. She is a National Geographic Explorer and TEDx speaker. Iva explored more than 300 caves, and has published scientific papers on the bizarre spider-like cave beetles of southern Europe. Her work has been featured in international media like the Guardian and Live Science. Some of her cave explorations were captured in videos that can be viewed here and here and new species that she described were listed among Top ten species described in 2016. She is also the co-founder of Taxon Expeditions.

PROGRAM

Day by Day Program

Location
Apetina, and surrounding area, is the perfect frontline. Its surrounding primary forests are a "black hole" on the scientific map—a region of immense, undocumented biodiversity. By basing our expeditions here, we ensure that our research is rooted in indigenous leadership and that every discovery directly benefits the community that protects these lands.
Real Expedition

The rivers of Suriname's interior are filled with rapids (sulas). Navigating them requires knowledge of the rocks and water levels for safety and access to untouched areas. The Wayana will lead you far beyond the map’s edge, opening the gates to a world where ancient ancestral wisdom and the living forest are one. Guided by their expert trackers, you will learn to see the "invisible" life of the jungle—from rare, cryptic reptiles to the sacred rhythms of the Tapanahony River
